Had an interesting conversation with some of our staff yesterday. A group of them was chowing down on some flatbreads and salads and I commented on how cool it was that our staff seem to take full advantage of our 70% off associate discount by eating the vast majority of their meals at Modmarket. One of our staffers pointed out that in addition to everyone liking the food, almost everyone on our staff had lost weight or been feeling healthier since we opened our doors. Further questioning revealed that Fletcher (aka Flexor), our mohawk sporting, cross trained salad maker/cashier/dish washer/flatbread artisan had lost 18 lbs since we opened and the only lifestyle change he had made was eating at Modmarket. That is pretty awesome. Our food is not health food. It is just real food. Simple, whole ingredients combined in ways that taste great. Our portions are big enough that I don’t think anyone leaves hungry but not so big that people are over eating. I always figured that if you ate a ‘modmarket diet’ everyday, your health would improve. This is mainly because it is so difficult to find food like what we serve at Modmarket unless you cook every meal yourself. And even then, it can be tough (and very time consuming!). If anyone wants to try this out themselves – email me and we will work out a special discount option for you(first come, first serve). You eat at Modmarket everyday for lunch and dinner for a month and track your weight and how you feel overall. Kind of like a reverse ’supersize me’. You can order anything you want off the menu, all of the choices are fair game. Be a fun little experiment. My guess is that you will feel better by the end of it and maybe even lose a little bit of weight. Any takers???

Love this interactive slideshow detailing 20 ways to eat better and feel great. Yes, these tips are all consistent with being more healthy (and are aligned with the Modmarket menu), but we love that there is a focus on eating to simply feel better. In our opinion, there is not enough emphasis on how eating properly just makes you feel well all the time. Food is fuel, plain and simple. Our bodies are engines that need fuel to run, and its performance is determined by what type of fuel we put in. As avid athletes in several outdoor sports, we’ve strived to make sure the Modmarket menu is the perfect fuel for our bodies. From whole ingredients as toppings to our high protein whole wheat dough, whatever you choose on our menu will make you feel better until your next meal. Shouldn’t all food sustain you that way, even that which you get on the go?

We often get into ‘discussions’ with people regarding food and the practices used in raising/growing said food. People that supply meat are the worst. Most of the people we have encountered (there are exceptions and those are the people we end up working with) have no clue about where the food they sell comes from and also do not understand the problems that result from many of the practices used in raising the products they sell. Below is a conversation I had the other day:
Me: Do you sell any grass fed or grass finished beef?

I have been buying cage free eggs for years. I have always thought they tasted better and liked both the color and consistency of the yolks. Today though, I found something even better. Pasture raised eggs. The hens that lay these eggs roam around in fields and eat worms. This is what hens were designed to do and you can REALLY taste and see the difference.
Check out the picture. The egg on the right is the pasture raised egg, the egg on the left is the whole foods organic cage free egg. The pasture egg has a much richer color and the yolk seems to pop off the plate. It is amazing how much better they taste too. I will leave it to you to guess which type of egg we are using in modmarket…
