Good problem to have, but still a problem

Those of you who have been eating at Modmarket since day 1 may have noticed an interested phenomena as of late.  Lines, especially at lunch time.  When we started, we were busy, but never really slammed and we were able to keep service times exactly where we wanted them.  As things picked up we kept tweaking things so that we could keep up with the higher customer counts.  But over the last month, things have really ramped up and at times, our old way of doing things has resulted in some LONG lines (out the door on numerous occasions).  Don’t worry though, we are working on a variety of solutions that will hopefully make the line move much faster!  And if you are short on time, you may want to consider just calling in your order – we can have it ready for you, and you can skip the line, pick up your order and be out of the store in just a minute or two!

Give Us Feedback!!

Regular visitors to the site will notice a new little red tab on the right side of the homepage that says ‘Feedback’.  This is a very cool feature we just added which allows us to capture feedback and ideas from our customers.  Modmarket was designed from the beginning to be a flexible framework that would evolve to not just what we thought was the ultimate fast food restaurant, but to what our customers thought was the ultimate fast food restaurant. A key component of this is gathering feedback and suggestions.  The little app we are using called UserVoice allows us to capture feedback and ideas, have people vote on them and also have us update the Modmarket community on what we are doing with the feedback.  It has only been live for 24 hours at this point and we have already begun a great dialogue with come customers on things they would like to see change at the Mod.  I think this is a neat example of how we can use technology to make our restaurant just a little bit better than what people expect.  Good stuff.

10 things for 2010

Here is a little list of 10 things Modmarket is going to try and do in 2010.
1. update our blog more regularly: we have been terrible about doing this, it is becoming a higher priority for me this year
2. update our facebook page with more coupons: we have a ton of fans and have done a horrid job of sending them cool coupons and whatnot. that is going to change soon.
3. figure out how to market to the gluten free community in Boulder: i think we have one of the best selections of gluten free food in all of Boulder and we need to make sure all the gluten haters in Boulder get wind of this.
4. decorate our slot: our long slot in our north wall is begging to be brightened up. we are open to suggestions, but right now we are leaning towards some cool modern wallpaper designs.
5. host a saturday brunch – our pizzas taste amazing with an egg on top – we need to sort out how get a bunch of peeps into the store one Saturday morning to try this out
6. get bike jerseys emblazoned with Modmarket logos and whatnot
7. buy more produce directly from farms – we missed the major part of the growing season last summer b/c we opened in September, but this year we are going to try and source even more local produce during the summer months
8. cater more events: last month, we catered an awesome 400 person event. it was fun, the food was awesome and we need to do more of these
9. figure out a happy hour schedule/menu: we have cheap beer and wine all of the time, but we need to create a mod happy hour schedule. our side of Boulder needs one.
10. get our online ordering system live: it is ridiculous you have to call to place an order. our online setup needs to be pushed live. hopefully we can do this in the next few weeks.

Pumpkin Pie Flatbread = yum

After about a month of prototyping, our Pumpkin Pie flatbread is now ready for consumption.  Pretty simple – dough, a pumpkin pie mix created on the fly by Rob and myself, and some whipped cream.  It tastes soooooooooo good.  People keep ordering a half and wishing they ordered a full size.  Don’t be one of those people, order big to start with, you will not regret it.

Lose Weight By Working At Modmarket

Had an interesting conversation with some of our staff yesterday.  A group of them was chowing down on some flatbreads and salads and I commented on how cool it was that our staff seem to take full advantage of our 70% off associate discount by eating the vast majority of their meals at Modmarket.  One of our staffers pointed out that in addition to everyone liking the food,  almost everyone on our staff had lost weight or been feeling healthier since we opened our doors.  Further questioning revealed that Fletcher (aka Flexor), our mohawk sporting, cross trained salad maker/cashier/dish washer/flatbread artisan had lost 18 lbs since we opened and the only lifestyle change he had made was eating at Modmarket.  That is pretty awesome.  Our food is not health food.  It is just real food.  Simple, whole ingredients combined in ways that taste great.  Our portions are big enough that I don’t think anyone leaves hungry but not so big that people are over eating.  I always figured that if you ate a ‘modmarket diet’ everyday, your health would improve.  This is mainly because it is so difficult to find food like what we serve at Modmarket unless you cook every meal yourself.  And even then, it can be tough (and very time consuming!).  If anyone wants to try this out themselves – email me and we will work out a special discount option for you(first come, first serve).  You eat at Modmarket everyday for lunch and dinner for a month and track your weight and how you feel overall.  Kind of like a reverse ’supersize me’.    You can order anything you want off the menu, all of the choices are fair game.  Be a fun little experiment.  My guess is that you will feel better by the end of it and maybe even lose a little bit of weight.  Any takers???

Changing expectations…

We will go ahead and warn you now, we are not going to be like every other restaurant.  modmarket is our little test lab for tons of interesting ideas on how to make fast food more modern, more interesting and more sustainable.

Our menu is pretty simple — flatbreads, salads, some baked goods and good, cheap wine.  We have been prototyping these foods in our kitchens for quite some time now and we are excited to begin serving them to ‘paying’ customers in the near future and getting feedback on our creations (the skinny so far is that they are extremely tasty).   This blog will serve as a little porthole into our company and let you follow along as we build a company that thinks about fast food a little differently than you would expect….
